On Tuesday 12 January 4:53 pm local time, the island of Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake. The 7.0 magnitude natural disaster lasted over minute: causing horrific damage throughout the country.
Along with donating 1 million euros to the Fondation de France, BNP Paribas is encouraging its employees to make contributions to relief organisations in order to aid the victims in Haiti. BNP Paribas entities and subsidiaries across the world are partaking in this initiative to give support to Haiti. The relief organisations have been chosen based on their ability to effectively deliver both short- and long-term relief and redevelopment efforts.
Jean Clamon (photo), Managing Director of the Group, and Francis Charhon, C.E.O. of the Fondation de France, reflect on the mobilisation and urgency of the situation.
“First I’d like to thank BNP Paribas for having swung into action so quickly for Haiti, with their situation there is extremely complicated. We have to think about the most urgent requirements and help those organisations already on site, and with immediate needs. We also have to start preparing reconstruction, and when we say reconstruction, that means the return to normal living conditions for a certain number of people. We will be paying particular attention to children, and to providing food and water, and will be helping with the rebuilding of schools and clinics…” – Francis Charhon
