BNP Paribas announces today it has enhanced its securities platform in Korea by adding over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives capability. This further underscores BNP Paribas’ growth strategy in the burgeoning equity and derivatives broker market in Asia Pacific.

BNP Paribas Securities has been a provider of a wide range of investment financial services since August 2002, leveraging its strong global franchise, and is expanding its reach to include retail investors. It has obtained an over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives licence in November 2011.

Hyungho Choi, Chief Executive of BNP Paribas Securities Korea said “BNP Paribas’ strength lies with the ability to capture opportunities with long-term perspectives, rather than to focus on short-term performance. As a committed long-term servicing partner in the country, BNP Paribas will continue to contribute directly to the Korean economy by providing financial services that satisfy the needs of customers, as we have been doing for the last ten years.”

Renaud Meary, Head of Structured Equity, Asia- Pacific at BNP Paribas Global Equities and Commodity Derivatives team, said today that BNP Paribas’ move to expand into the retail investor segment was strategic as it used to service primarily the institutional clients.

“The Korea securities platform enhances BNP Paribas’ growth strategy regionally and it underscores the Bank’s commitment to shoring up its equity and derivatives franchise in this market,” Renaud added. “Given the importance of the Korean economy in the region and the level of development and sophistication of its financial sector, BNP Paribas aims to make a significant and positive contribution to the Korean financial market with the Bank’s financial know-how, as a provider of financial solutions that are recognized globally.”

Jieun Yoo, Managing Director of Equity Derivatives at BNP Paribas Securities Korea, said, “BNP Paribas has been targeting institutional clients while offering services in equity brokerage, the issuance of bonds, M&A advisory services. With the OTC derivatives license obtained last November, we aim to broaden our clientele base to retail individual investors and increase the public awareness of BNP Paribas while continuing on investing in our existing strengths.”

BNP Paribas also announced its sponsorship of a Photography Exhibition themed “Keep Reaching”, showcasing images of people striving to improve their lives for better tomorrow. These images were captured by students from the School of Photography at Chung Ang University. BNP Paribas’ philosophy of supporting people pursuing their dreams was reflected in this event.

BNP Paribas is a leading player in providing solutions, products and services for risks and investor preferences in Asia Pacific. It was awarded the ‘Best Credit Derivatives House’ and ‘Best Derivatives House of the Year, Korea’ in The Asset Triple A Investment Awards 2011 by The Asset.
