BNP Paribas Cardif Life Insurance, the Korean subsidiary of BNP Paribas Cardif, the insurance arm of BNP Paribas, yesterday (4 December 2014) held the ‘Kimchi-Making’ event, “Kimjang; a Korean tradition of making Kimchi for the coming winter”, with Myeonmok Community Welfare Center in Seoul to share the joy of harvest and food with around 300 households in the neighbourhood.

During the event, the participants, including employee volunteers of BNP Paribas Cardif Life Insurance, members of BNP Paribas Cardif Life Insurance’s ‘Green Leader Program’ from Myeonmok Community Welfare Center, and ‘Forest for Life’, an environmental education NGO, used around 3,000 kilograms of cabbages and other vegetables to make the signature Korean food, Kimchi. Some of the vegetables were the harvest from the ‘Green Leader’ farm.

The programme also invited neighbors in the local community, mostly the elderly who lived alone, to enjoy the freshly-made Kimchi with broiled pork meat, a popular menu for Koreans on the day of Kimjang. After the meal, BNP Paribas Cardif Life Insurance employees led a group of children participating in the event to go outside and deliver the Kimchi they made to about 300 households in the neighbourhood.

This Kimchi-making event was part of BNP Paribas Cardif Life Insurance’s ‘Green Leader Program’, which aims to nurture positive thinking among the less privileged children through environmental education. Launched in 2011, the ‘Green Leader Program’ received the ‘10th Environmental Education Program Certificate’ from the Ministry of Environment in 2013 in recognition of its contribution to the society. In April this year, the programme was also selected as one of the best CSR programmes at the ‘2014 WIN-WIN Festival & Awards’ organised by the Customers Council.

Jung Soon Kim, one of the seniors invited to enjoy the food at the event, said: “I am so glad to join this event together with these young people. This is a great occasion to bring people together to share joy and love.”

Chang Min Joo, a volunteer from BNP Paribas Cardif Life Insurance, said: “BNP Paribas Cardif Life Insurance always encourages employees to participate in CSR activities to make contributions to the society. It was a great fun to make Kimchi together with the other participants and to share the food with the community.”
